Another option we have put together which should be quite simple for users who find their boot.ini to be missing (and have not yet rebooted) is the following:
Download: Windows XP (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/winxpboot.ini)( also windows 2000 installed in a folder named "Windows" ) OR Windows 2000 (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/win2kboot.ini)
+ Copy it into the root directory of your Windows drive (eg. C:\) + Rename it to "boot.ini" + Go to start, then Run and type in "msconfig" + Click on the "boot.ini" tab, and select "Check all boot paths" + There will be a series of popups for the invalid installation paths in the above files (14 if all goes to plan), and the correct settings will be placed in your boot.ini. + Remember to hit "Apply" before exiting the tool, as this will save the new settings.
Most likely, this file will contain the correct path to your windows installation somewhere there, and will be found by checking it using the msconfig tool. -- The cake is a lie!
I followed this and if you rename the file "boot.ini" it fails to show the boot.ini tab when you run msconfig.
I know from my modding days in Dawn of War that .ini files are often named without the the .ini on the end. So I renamed the file just "boot" and voila, the "boot.ini" tab has appeared when I run msconfig.
Good so far but now when I run the "Check all boot paths" I get the choice of "Would you like to remove it from the boot.ini file?"
If I say no then it just cycles through the 14/15 times you get asked then then you exit back to where you were.
So I assume I must say Yes, but what happens then? will it offer to rebuild the boot.ini or what?
CCP MIndstar's post is innacurate and incomplete, what was the point of posting half the information. If you are going to post a solution post the complete thing from start to finish and have the correct naming conventions in there.
Can someone please update/complete his post.
Thanks
Ok, I've done it again and when I get the choice of "Would you like to remove it from the boot.ini file?" I say yes. I keep saying yes when asked as it's saying the path is wrong.
Eventually it stops asking and the path that is left is the correct one.
Click apply and the job is done.
The only thing now is to reboot to test it.....but I would rather leave this until absolutely necessary as it may not work.
Also am I right in re-naming the "boot.ini" to "boot"
So many questions and bugger all help from the devs
You have to make sure the file is actually called "boot.ini", cause depending on your settings it will show as "boot.ini" while it is actually "boot.ini.txt". YOu have to enable a setting in folder options i believe to display all true file extensions, because windows will not touch "boot.ini.txt".
I personally fixed the problem by making a new notepad document, taking the sample boot.ini text from i believe the ccp post on the issue, and renaming it to boot.ini after windows tried to cheat me, then tested the file by going to the configuration screen, system properties, the advanced tab and clicking the "startup and recovery" button. When the boot.ini was still in txt form it would give me an error, when it finally didnt i rebooted and voila, np.
Though, this might not work for you. ________________________________________________ Currently training for "caldari overlord I"
